CGIH Conversations: Dr. Yvonne Flores
A transdisciplinary approach to investigate liver disease and cancer disparities in the U.S. and Mexico
Join the Center for Global and Immigrant Health (CGIH) and Students of Color for Public Health (SCPH) during National Public Health Week for a CGIH Conversation with Dr. Yvonne Flores.
Tuesday, April 5, 2022 to Tuesday, April 5, 202212:00 PM - 1:00 PM
Join the UCLA Center for Global and Immigrant Health (CGIH) and Students of Color for Public Health (SCPH) on National Public Health Week for a discussion of liver disease in the U.S. and Mexico. Liver disease is one of the main causes of death for Latinos in the U.S., and is the 6th leading cause of death in Mexico. Latinos now have the highest incidence of, and mortality from, liver cancer of all racial/ethnic groups in the U.S. Dr. Yvonne Flores incorporates different methodological approaches in her bi-national liver disease-related research, which include primary data collection, analysis of large data sets (e.g. SEER, NHANES), and biologically-driven research with clinical and laboratory data to identify molecular and genetic markers for detection and treatment of disease.
Dr. Yvonne Flores was born in Mexico, where she grew up in a bilingual and bicultural family. She uses her training in Health Services and Epidemiology to conduct research that focuses on the prevention of chronic diseases and reduction of health disparities among underserved populations. Dr. Flores is an Associate Professor in the Department of Health Policy and Management at FSPH and a research scientist at the Center for Cancer Prevention and Control Research.
We look forward to seeing you there!
