Capoeira Class (Martial Arts)

John Wooden Center - Blue Room

Capoeira is an afro-brazilian martial art with many expressive movements and unorthodox, sweeping kicks. This class will teach the fundamentals of these movements as well as some of the rich cultural and musical aspects of the martial art. Derived from African combat games, capoeiira is developed in Brazil by Africans and African-descendants subjected to slavery. Capoeira is manifested in the Roda, a ritual where two people perform a body dialogue based on movements of attack and defense under the regency of an orchestra, whose main musical instrument is the berimbau. Having its basic movement the ginga, a body swing guided by music, in capoeira there are attacks through kicks and headbutts that are opposed by defenses close to the ground, in order to produce a fluid dynamic of movements.
