Creating a Multi-Country Collaborative

Nursing Center for Excellence in Tobacco Control in Eastern and Central Europe

Tobacco use is the leading cause of preventable disease and death globally. Nurses, when educated appropriately, can play a pivotal role in reducing the suffering, disease and mortality burden related to tobacco use by increasing patients’ quit efforts. Based on their experience in the US and other countries, researchers at UCLA and UCSF were involved in creating an Eastern Europe Nurses Centre of Excellence for Tobacco Control that can be a model for others interested in implementation science. Nurse leaders in six countries (Czech Republic, Hungary, Moldova, Romania, Slovenia and Slovakia) participated in the project which involved multilingual web-based instruction, surveys and resources. Online Resources were valuable, but working with local champions are still essential. This virtual discussion will include identification of positive actions that promoted and accelerated support for the project as well as hurdles to overcome. Their experiences may be useful for others who are considering the development of other multi-country collaborations.
