Learn about fellowships to support language acquisition and regional studies on the Middle East and North African (MENA) as well as Southeast Asian Studies. Students in all disciplines are invited to attend the virtual session. International Education Week Event. 

The U.S. Department of Education Foreign Language and Area Studies (FLAS) grant programs are designed to support graduate and undergraduate students who will be studying languages and area studies courses at Intermediate level or higher at UCLA.

Eligibility:

  • Graduate or undergraduate student
  • U.S. citizen or permanent resident
  • Studying a less commonly taught language (of the MENA or Southeast Asia) at intermediate or advanced level

 

Requirements:

  • UCLA students who receive FLAS fellowships must be enrolled full time and required to take a language and one area studies courses for a letter grade at UCLA each term.
  • Take a before and after oral proficiency examination with a designated instructor.
  • Students must submit brief quarterly reports on their progress and one final end-of-the year online report
  • Report to the U.S. Department of Education every two years for eight years after graduation on the recipient’s occupation and the extent to which the FLAS language is being used.

 

Summer 2021 fellowships are for intensive language programs only. They provide a stipend of $2,500 plus tuition and fees to a maximum of $5,000, and (optional) up to $1,000 for travel (if UCLA allows travel during award period). FLAS funds may be used for intensive summer language study at UCLA or elsewhere. Courses can be taken via Distance Learning programs.

Academic year 2021-2022 fellowships are awarded for the academic year and provide a total stipend of $15,000 for graduate students and cover tuition and fees up to $18,000. AY awards may be used for dissertation research for students at the advanced level of language proficiency, but this must be approved in advance. Undergraduate recipients receive an award of $15,000 for the academic year.
